[ you've got all the time in the world to get things straight, kiddo. you're young, you've got your entire life ahead of you to get them where you want them to be. ( if only someone had been there to tell him that when he was your age. his mother had spent a good nine months out of the year off-world, and without a father figure … yeah, well. moving right along. ) ]
Normal … kinda hard to know what's supposed to be normal in this place. [ a beat. ] I'm good – trying to put this place back together, mostly. With the three of us, it's going pretty smoothly.
Want anything to drink, or do you just want me to get to the point of asking you over here so you can stop worrying the sky's gonna fall?
[ normal is everything they would rather put in any category but normal. that's what it is.
her little joke gets a laugh out of him, but before he even bothers to answer her he's holding up a finger signaling her to wait – and he goes off to retrieve what he'd called her here for. it's not much, but when he presents it to her, there's a little bit of apprehension and a sizable amount of pride in his expression.
two small things, one of which is his personal communicator. the one he'd brought with him when he'd first turned up here – and the other, the symbol of starfleet fashioned out of some metal he'd been able to find around the dome. it's far from crude, but it's also far from perfect. ( he's not a blacksmith, or an engineer for that matter, it can't even be close to perfect. )
he holds them out to her, grinning small but genuine. ]
If you're gonna be a member of the crew, I figured you might need something that speaks for it. The comm doesn't work, naturally, but … I'm not using it, so I thought –
[ jim you are bad at this. ]
An ensign needs to represent her standing. If you still want it, that is.
[She waits, looking around again just so she won't fidget in place. She knows there's nothing to fret over, now that he's reassured her of as much, but now she's just curious bordering on slightly impatient. Oops?
When he returns, hands her the communicator and the badge, her eyes go wide and her jaw drops a little. She takes them, carefully turning them over in her hands while she smiles. This... is the most meaningful thing anyone has done for her in this place. She can't help it, a small, surprised laugh escapes her before she can speak.]
I-- yes? Yeah, of course I do! I-- wow. [She shakes her head. She's a little speechless, forgive her.] Thank you. Like, seriously, thank you.
[ easy, kiddo. why does he know so many people that fidget when they're nervous? he swears this is all good things …
he watches her inspect what he's given her, and he can't help the pride he feels in the smile that spreads across her features. he'd been hoping that this wouldn't be ill-met, that she wouldn't have forgotten their conversation out in the apple orchard after he'd come back from his first venture outside the dome. were he back on the enterprise, he would have seriously considered recommending her for the academy – but this will have to do. she'd still have been a ways off from starfleet, anyway.
his arms fold across his chest, and he offers up a small laugh of his own. ]
Yeah? [ nothing to forgive. he's just glad you accepted. ] No thanks needed. Honestly … I thought you might have laughed about it. I'm glad you didn't.

-- yep, he clearly has her pegged. That sheepish smile turns even more so, and she shakes her head, laughing, a little embarrassed.]
Hey, if the sky falls, won't it hit the dome instead of us? [Hurr hurr, Sky.] But, no, I'm okay. Thanks. So what's up?
